On the anniversary of massacre of political prisoners in Iran

Call for immediate moratorium on executions in Iran

Members of the Iranian-Canadian communities, supporters of the Iranian resistance, will have a three day protest rally and hunger strike on the anniversary of massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988 and to express solidarity with political prisoners, victims of torture and executions. The rally will be in front of the Old City Hall in Toronto.

The recent wave of mass execution of political prisoners in Iran in the past few days is a bleak reminder that the criminal mullahs are not inclined to moderation. Since Hassan Rouhani came to power as the President, more than 2500 people have been executed.

The new wave of executions is unsurprisingly happening on the anniversary of mass execution of political prisoners in 1988. Many of these prisoners had already served their sentences and most of them were members or supporters PMOI. Canadian parliament adopted a unanimous resolution on June 5, 2013 recognizing the massacre of political prisoners in Iran in 1988 as a crime against humanity. Likewise Amnesty International called this crime a crime against humanity.

The audio tape of Hossein Ali Montazeri, Khomeini’s designated successor at the time, that has been revealed after 28 years, exposes a wider dimension of this carnage. Perpetrators of this massacre acknowledge this crime by their own voice.

In order to prevent a repeat of these crimes, perpetrators of crimes against humanity must be brought to justice in international tribunals similar to what we saw in Rwandan genocide and Srebrenica. We ask the Canadian government to categorically condemn the execution of political prisoners in Iran and act in coordination with other likeminded countries to put an end to executions in Iran. We also ask Canada, as a leading country on human rights in the world and the main sponsor of resolution about the situation of human rights in Iran in the UN General Assembly, to demand an international inquiry about the massacre of political prisoners in Iran and to make any improvement of relations with Iran conditional upon a halt to executions and a significant improvement of human rights.

Rally: August 20, 21 and 22, 2016

Time: 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Venue: Old City Hall, Toronto, the monument of unknown soldier
