Canada: Parliament Approves Motion Condemning Iran Regime, Urging Government to Stop Diplomatic Efforts

OTTAWA — Surprising the opposition, Liberals voted for a strongly-worded Conservative motion in the House of Commons on Tuesday condemning the Iranian regime.

The move saw Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and much of his caucus rise to agree to “strongly condemn the current regime in Iran,” to call on the government to “abandon its current plan and immediately cease any and all negotiations or discussions” to restore diplomatic relations, and to immediately list a branch of Iran’s military (the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC) as a terrorist entity under Canada’s Criminal Code — an action that not even the United States has taken.

The motion also supports Iranian people’s aspiration for Democracy and Freedom in Iran urging Canada to “stand with the people of Iran and recognize that they, like all people, have a fundamental right to freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression, including freedom of the press and other forms of communication, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of association.”
