NCRI – Senior Jordanian lawmaker Dr. Rula Alhroob has called for United Nations protection for the members of the main Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) following the October 29 missile attack on Camp Liberty in Iraq.
Statement by Dr. Rula Alhroob, Chair of the Freedoms and Human Rights Committee of the Parliament of Jordan:
On October 29, 2015, in a deadly attack on Camp Liberty perpetrated by Iranian regime elements in the government and security forces of Iraq, 24 residents were killed and hundreds were injured with large sections of Camp Liberty destroyed. This criminal operation was carried out in one of the most protected areas of Baghdad near the International Airport and deployment of U.S. forces and thus was impossible to implement without cooperation from Iraqi governmental and security apparatus.
One and a half years after the removal of [Nuri] Maliki, Camp Liberty’s file is still in the hands of Faleh Fayyad, a well-known agent of the Iranian regime who, along with others managing the camp, has been directly involved in the massacres in [Camp] Ashraf and Liberty in the past seven years.
Despite many international calls, the government of Iraq continues to dodge its responsibilities vis-à-vis Liberty residents. It has not provided the minimum of security for them nor has it initiated any investigations.
Following the missile attack, the Iraqi forces not only did not facilitate measures to normalize the conditions in the camp but prevented entry of food, fuel and basic needs to the camp and did not allow sewage tankers to enter the camp.
Therefore, we urge our own government, the United Nations, the United States government, and the European Union to obligate the Iraqi government to live up to its responsibilities regarding the security and safety of the residents and to investigate the missile attack of October 29. Moreover, we resolutely demand the following for provision of security and the wellbeing of Camp Liberty residents:
A. Designation of Camp Liberty as a refugee camp under UNHCR supervision to guarantee the security of the residents by the United Nations;
B. Provision of immediate needs to Camp Liberty after the missile attack and to normalize conditions in the camp;
C. Removing Camp Liberty file from the hands of Faleh Fayyad and replacing the camp’s management with individuals not associated with the Iranian regime;
D. Allowing the sale of residents’ property in Ashraf or reimbursing them for that property so that they can cover their expenses.
