US House Speaker Urges Obama to Halt ‘Concessions’ to Iran

Washington Examiner, 22 Nov. 2016– House GOP leaders on Tuesday asked President Obama to refrain from planning ‘new concessions’ to Iran under the nuclear agreement during the remainder of his term, after reports that he is looking for ways to entice Iran to adhere to the deal.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and other GOP leaders made the request in a letter to Obama, which also asked Obama to sign a bill about to clear Congress that would extend current sanctions against Iran for the next decade. The lawmakers said signing the bill ‘should be the only step’ Obama takes regarding Iran during remainder of his tenure.
‘We respectfully request that your administration take no further actions designed to bolster international investment in Iran, or otherwise change or alter the existing sanctions regime within international organizations through the use of waivers or through administrative actions to include the issuance of new regulations, general licenses, frequently asked questions, or other guidance,’ the GOP lawmakers wrote in the letter.
Republicans have been deeply critical of Obama’s treatment of Iran. They oppose the Iran nuclear deal and want stricter sanctions against the country, which is a chief sponsor of terrorism in the region.
